Finding Your Purpose And Passion!

I recently did a television program in Canada called The Steven and Chris Show on CBC, (click on title of this article to see the video) all about moms going back to work and moms of all ages re-inventing themselves and finding their purpose and passion on this planet. One thing I know for sure, is that purpose always involves doing something you love, and using your unique gifts, talents and capabilities in order to serve others. I have never met anyone who was living in their purpose and "on purpose" in service to others who wasn't at their absolute best and happiest self. I just finished doing the most inspirational play with the most incredible cast of people. The play was Dreamgirls, and the best part for me was that all of these talented people were out there making their dreams come true. It's never too late to go for it and watching people shine in their light is truly "blissful" for me. So whether you're a new mom out there wanting to re-invent yourself, or you're a twentysomething searching for your purpose on this planet, or a thirty, forty or fiftysomething, approaching the new midlife, there is a way to do it like never before. Who saw Marianne Williamson in Toronto this weekend at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre?

I just went to a conference this weekend and one of the highlights was definitely the ethereal, benevolent, and very enlightened Marianne Williamson. She talked about prayer in a way I haven't heard before and made the notion of aging seem fun and light and even a little sexy if that's possible. I loved when she talked about the poem about the man resting his weary, aching bones and how she could never relate to that line until she got older and finally understood, and couldn't wait to get inside and rest her aching bones. There were so many moments and I can't wait to start reading her latest book, The Age of Miracles: Embracing the New Midlife. I also want to read her book Everyday Grace.
You can listen to her on Oprah and Friends every day and if you click on the link, you can catch some of the interview she did on Oprah. I'd love to hear your favourite moment from the conference. Or did you see Marianne Williamson somewhere else in the United States or Canada? What were the highlights for you? I love talent, creativity and originality. There you go, that is six words that sums up not only what I love, but this fantastic new book of six word memoirs by writers famous and obscure. You have to check it out. What I love about it as a coach, is that it tempts you to try the same, and figure out what your life purpose or mission is or has been. It's fascinating stuff and the originality and the range of autobiographies makes for a scintillating and exciting read. And how great that they probably started out in a entirely different direction and happened upon this fabulous creative explosion and just went with it and look what happened. Good for you for trusting yourself!

When it comes to Choosing Camps and Schools and Even Programs for Our Kids we Can All Be Indecisive

I remember agonizing over what school to send our children to and back and forth we went, researching, overresearching, polling and a polling until we whittled down the choice to two schools and finally decided on one. Being decisive when it comes to yourself can be difficult, but when it comes to your children it can be even more so. Sometimes, it's great to break out and just indulge in a great dessert. And the hottest dessert on the runways these days, seems to be this Red Velvet Cake. Family Day Article Featured in the Letter to the Editor in tomorrow's Ottawa Citizen!

What did you do on Family Day? I have to admit for the most programmed mom on this side of the Atlantic, we really just chilled and just relaxed. It was fabulous! We read, caught up on homework and BOOK REPORTS! (Heaven help me). We made chocolate chip cookies and some of my friends know all about those! We watched the movie Grease together with Olivia Newton John and John Travolta-ever notice how both of their names have John in them? It was great. It was a chill day. So check out the Ottawa Citizen for my Letter to the Editor on Family Day. Essentially, what I say is that if fifty is the new forty, and brown is the new black, then maybe Family Day is the new Sunday!

One of my favorite things that the Dalai Lama says is "if possible, you should help others. If that is not possible, at least you should no harm."
Love that. Love that sentiment. And it is so true. Also I love the boomerang effect of kindness, and the knowledge that kindness begets even more kindness. Some say the value of Honesty is more important than Kindness. I disagree. I think that kindness goes a long way. It is gentle, it's loving, it makes people feel good and it really does warm your heart. Also kindness to someone else is really the same thing as Kindness towards yourself.

If you haven't already seen it, you may want to check out the Steven and Chris Show on CBC. They are fantastic and are being called the Oprah of Canada. The Steven and Chris Show is on every day on CBC, (Channel 6) at 2 pm and the show is great. They are gorgeous, entertaining, very funny, watchable and The National Post Newspaper called the show a "surefire hit!" They are also known as the designer guys and they are experts at style, fashion, fun and relationships. They have even been on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Today I am on the show talking about the Secrets to Long Lasting Relationships and I share my secret 7 L's for success!

What's In Your Fridge column in Viva Magazine interviewed me for the book "LOVE MOMMY"

One of the coolest things to happen since the book LOVE MOMMY was published, was when we got a call from this fabulous magazine called Viva Magazine, gorgeous glossy pages full of recipes, fashion, health and wellness tips and all presented in a beautiful manner. Anyway, they have this column called "What's in Your Fridge" and they came and did a photo shoot with me in front of the fridge and interviewed me. It was really funny, because we do have a really organized fridge with all sorts of healthy snacks, crudites, and bowls of fresh cut strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and healthy low fat cheese and skim milk. But I will admit that before they came, my husband said, "Whatever you do, don't forget to get rid of that salami that has been there for two months!"

Honesty, Integrity, Teammanship-Teaching those values to your children by example

We set the example. We are the guide for how our kids treat others. When we act with integrity, honesty and teammanship, our children learn to do the same. When we act only for ourselves, and for our own good, our children learn to only think of themselves and not others. Honesty and integrity beget more honesty and integrity. These are values that sometimes are overlooked, but without them, we cannot live with our heads held high. It feels so good to know that you are living a life based on good values, and I guess that is the best reward-knowing that you are teaching your children values based on all that is good and selfless and honest. This is the greatest gift you can give to your children and to yourself.

Today, my daughter and I held hands while we watched a rehearsal of the Nutcracker at the National Ballet of Canada. It was one of those yummy moments where I didn't know where to look first, on the stage at all of those beautiful dancers or at my precious daughter beside me, sharing in this incredible moment together. Moments are what make relationships even more special than the natural love and adoration you feel for your child. But in recognizing the moments, capturing them in some way, and not just reacting to life, but reflecting and then "highlighting" the blissful times, makes us appreciate our relationships even more and be even more grateful. It also helps us to really appreciate each incredible moment as it happens. Some days are all about homework, and getting to school on time and getting to this activity or program on time. And even those days have special moments. Write them down. Record them into a tape recorder. Tap away at your computer and type them in a file for posterity. Staying Calm even when you're Stressed-How do you do it?

I read an article in the current issue of Yoga Journal that really caught my eye on how to stay calm in the storm, which is sometimes hard to do when you are balancing all that we balance, wanting to create perfect children and be a perfect mommy, and as we all know, there is no such thing as perfection. In fact, someone told me they recently heard Anthony Robbins being interviewed and he said that his "aha moment" was realizing that most of us feel badly because we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves and can't possibly meet them. Isn't it all about letting go of control and allowing life to flow more freely? Learning how to breathe properly is a gift that you can take with you into any situation. I love the healing breath that I have learnt in my Ashtanga classes and use that breath when I can't sleep, to relax and even when I have to go on television or give a speech and want to stay grounded. So the breath is a great place to start. I also love yoga, in spite of a funny article I just read in the Globe this week about yoga taking over and how we've Americanized yoga with our lululemon pants and chai lattes. But I have to say, whether it's pure, undiluted yoga, hot yoga, cold yoga, ashtanga, hatha, infant yoga, pregnancy yoga-I can't say enough good things about it. Because it is does bring more joy and less stress into our lives and as mothers, we all need as much calm to soothe our tired bodies, minds and souls after a day of homework and busyness. Take a breath right now, and breathe out for just a bit longer. Do it five times, inhale for the count of five, and exhale for five, and notice the calmer sensation you feel, as you begin to relax further and further. Being relaxed is a great way to start being grateful that you are a mom. And forgive yourself, when you lose it, or feel like losing it. Take another deep breath and find the yoga in you, whatever that may be.
