Family Day Article Featured in the Letter to the Editor in tomorrow's Ottawa Citizen!

What did you do on Family Day? I have to admit for the most programmed mom on this side of the Atlantic, we really just chilled and just relaxed. It was fabulous! We read, caught up on homework and BOOK REPORTS! (Heaven help me). We made chocolate chip cookies and some of my friends know all about those! We watched the movie Grease together with Olivia Newton John and John Travolta-ever notice how both of their names have John in them? It was great. It was a chill day. So check out the Ottawa Citizen for my Letter to the Editor on Family Day. Essentially, what I say is that if fifty is the new forty, and brown is the new black, then maybe Family Day is the new Sunday!
Please post a comment and let me know what you did on this Family Day. I'd really love to hear!
Just click on the word "comments" and post your reaction to Family Day. Was it fun? What did you love? What would you different next year? I'd love to hear from you!

My eldest son, who is ten, said to me this past Sunday that he wished he could be invisible for a day to see if his friends' moms are really as nice to their children as they appear to be when he is at their homes. Being the guilty mother that I am, I wondered if he thought I was mean all of the time. Not wanting to be "outniced" by all of the other mothers, I resolved to be super nice for the whole day on Monday in honour of Family Day and let all the family rules slide.

Needless to say, I found the experience exhausting and unrealistic — gritting my teeth when breakfast consisted of pancakes with chocolate sauce and ice cream or smiling when I got hit in the head with a snowball.

At the end of the day, I figured out that the kids in fact did not like me better and they weren't happier or better adjusted without the rules. Their only comment was that, "Mom was acting weird." Family Day taught me that a family isn't perfect and that's part of what makes being part of one so special and so much fun!

Thanks for writing! Rules are really important and sometimes I know I am a little lenient with treats and fun. But my highlight yesterday and today was just laughing with my kids and I realize we really do have fun and laugh lots together and they really are my favourite people. But I know that I can always improve on the rules and boundaries, because kids really need them and we are helping them by providing them. Thanks for the reminder and for your comment.
