How to Raise Loving, Secure and Self-Reliant Children

I am calling out to all of my friends, colleagues, and fellow moms everywhere for your views on how to maintain that incredible closeness we have with our children and the ability to let them become independent. How to let them know how much they are loved and yet not indulge their every whim, how to pick them up when they fall, and yet teach them how to pick themselves up at the same time. Blessing Of a Skinned Knee is a beautiful book that teaches us how raise self-reliant children. Wendy Mogel in her inspiring book with her nine blessings helps us addresss key parenting issues such as respect, keeping expectations in line with your child's temperament, coping with frustration, avoiding overscheduling (oops!), overindugence and more. We are so busy, so overscheduled, and we want to fit it all in. I know that time spent with my children and not just quality time, but morning time, cuddle time, meal time, homework time, bath time, bedtime, is all important, and I know that every minute of it stands them in good stead. Balance is the key element for all of us in our lives and as a Life Coach, I am forever doing this exercise called the Wheel of Life with my clients where we determine how deeply satisifed they are at a given time with love, career, heath, family, fun and personal growth at a given time. And when one of the wedges in the wheel is out of whack, our whole balance is off. I'd love to hear from you how to balance wanting to hold on for dear life to letting them have their independence. Their first sleepover, camp, school, drops offs-how do you make it work for you? And what are the life lessons you use to help you let them find those wings even when the roots are strong? Do you believe in reaching down with a bandaid the moment the knee is skinned and being there "at the ready", or letting them experience the fall? How do you do it? I'd love to know because it is my greatest challenge. What is it for you?

A beautiful review was just written on Momscape by Susie Cortwright about my book LOVE MOMMY: WRITING LOVE LETTERS TO YOUR BABY and I just wanted to share it with all of you love mommy writers out there. It touched me deeply and I felt so excited that people are getting it and responding to it. Because my goal is undoubtedly to inspire, uplift and help people do this thing that I know ultimately will bring them much joy and fulfillment. So thank you to Susie Cortright from Momscape and to all the other moms who are enjoying the book and more importantly, beginning to write love letters to your babies and children.

New Motherhood and Body Image

If you're like me, you're always struggling to lose that extra five pounds. Okay, who am I kidding? It's closer to ten and I'm being conservative. When I wrote my book, Love Mommy: Writing Love Letters To Your Baby, the last thing on my mind was how my body looked. I look back now on my post pregnancy weight, and I am shocked by how little it really mattered. It's almost like the way you enjoy fashion magazines up until pregnancy, and then once you are expecting, they hold about as little appeal for you as a tuna fish sandwich. Suddenly, all you want to read is parenting magazines and books about how to prepare. Which is why, I was thrilled to hear about a new book that celebrates the bumps of post pregnancy and the honest dilemnas we are faced with. In From the Hips: A Comprehensive, Open Minded, Uncensored, Totally Honest Guide to Pregnancy, Birth and Becoming a Parent, by Rebecca Odes and Ceridwen Morris, they finally offer readers a ton of advice about what do do with everything to do with pregnancy. What I liked about the book is its positive spin, which is people say about my book, Love Mommy: Writing Love Letters To Your Baby-there's no room or need for negativity, complaining or anything like that because the joy of motherhood is so great, it really does supercede everything else, including a little weight gain. Do you have or have you had a positive body image during and after pregnancy. Are you in the category of not caring, because you are so in love with being a mom, or do you feel in love with the idea of being a mom, but nonetheless, can't wait to fit back into that pair of skinny jeans?

HOW CAN WE SLOW DOWN AS MOMS?

How many of you feel like you're racing against the clock, on a treadmill with activities and programming? I would love to hear how you slow down? Do you do yoga, or meditation, breathing exercises or some form of activity (there's that word again!) to slow down the pace? What do have your kids do to slow down their pace, and just relax? And what about suggestions that don't involve TV or video, computers or some kind of technology? Would love to hear from you.

P.S. Check out my latest book Love Mommy; Writing Love Letters to Your Baby, published by ECW Press, available in all major bookstores and on Amazon Books. com and Amazon Books.ca.
