Celebrities and Cutting Your Baby's Hair for the first time
I have to admit I felt for Celine Dion when I saw the cover of the magazine with a picture of her son with his mane of long golden hair, that she has decided to keep long.
Given the opportunity, I would have loved for my son to keep his hair long, only my husband was not giving in. When my son turned one, my husband said, "enough is enough." It's time for a haircut and he said he was going to send him to his own barber if I didn't get cracking and that's when I quickly pulled it together and took him to my favourite salon for his first haircut. I'll never forget it. Being the angel he's always been, he fell asleep in his stroller as were entering the Anna K. Salon. Antonella propped him up in her chair and as she wrapped hin a black plastic cape, he looked so endearing because his golden head seemed so small and lost in the hugeness of the cape around him. As she took out her spray pump of water and wet his entire head, and then her scissors and comb out of their little pouch, she started to cut. She moved his head to the right, then to the left and back again and he never cried or made any sound at all. No one could believe it. His head was jostled from side to side and he didn't wake up during the entire ordeal. I put all the golden curls in an envelope, and we got into the car. As always, I checked my rear view mirror to catch a glimpse of him. Only, my little baby wasn't in the car seat anymore. In his place was a beautiful little boy.

What are your memories of your son or daughter's first haircut. What do you think about Celine Dion's son with his mane of long hair?

Beautifully written article. Reading your words makes me feel like I want to go back in time and record my children's memories. My children had their 1st haircut by their grandfather who is a Hairdresser and I remember them being happy and not feeling sad which many children feel when having their 1st haircut. As far as Celine goes, she should be allowed to do whatever her, her husband and their child want to do with his hair.

Judy,
I loved your book! While I'm not great at writing my memories, your book inspired me to tell them more stories on a regular basis. We're following your chapters and reliving their special moments all over again at our dinner table.
With respect to haircuts, I made the error of giving my daughter her first hair cut - BY MYSELF! She needed her bangs trimmed and I tackled (sic. butchered) them myself. I made the error of doing this the day before her first birthday and her photos from her special day show her gorgeous, happy face smiling beneath crooked and way too short bangs. My husband was not amused and made me swear to never again go anywhere near our children's locks with scissors.
Thanks for bringing back another great memory.

Wow that's really cool to have a hairdresser in the family. You must have all loved that. And you're right. I'm not sure why so many people are commenting on Celine's son having this long hair. He actually looks kind of cute and he defintiely looks like like a pop/rock star and his mother is in in the biz, so he will probably end up in the biz somehow too. Hair and guys seems to be a hot topic these days. Just look at Sanjaya!
Judy! Welcome to the blogosphere; I love the look of your blog. :) I don't actually have a story of my own daughter. She's 2-1/2 and hasn't had a haircut, because by the age of 2 she still didn't have any hair! hahaha... So I'm loving her big curls and finally being able to pull it up into two tiny springs of pigtails, or one Pebbles tail on the top of her head (or as she puts it, her "tailpony").
However, I do have a story of when *I* was a child. My brother's hair grew at the same rate as my daughter's now is, and by the time he was 2 it was FINALLY coming in, and my mom was so happy. This was in the mid-70s, and it was a time where parents could go into stores to grab something and leave the kids in the car without Children's Aid coming after them. So she popped in to a store with us parked right out front where she could see us, and I got into the first aid kit and voila, I found scissors! So I thought hey, he's starting to get hair, maybe he needs Big Sis to cut it for him. So I told him to sit still, and cut all of his hair off. ALL OF IT. My mom came back to the car less than 5 minutes later to see a bald son, and her daughter with the worst cut bangs ever (yes, I decided to turn the scissors on myself). I can still hear her crying. Of course, we both laugh hysterically over the story now, but she didn't find it so funny at the time! :)
Thanks so much for that great story Nikki. That is too funny and what is also cool is how well you remember all the details as if it happened yesterday. That's the best part of telling these stories and writing these stories down, is that they stay in your family repertoire forever and you can laugh about them always. This reminds me of a great thing in the book Love Mommy: Writing Love Letters To Your Baby, which is when your child says a funny word or an adorable sentance, often the wrong way, which is the funniest, and you write those words and phrases down. So those Susyisms and Davidisms and Marcyisms become part of your shared family story. Anyway Nikki, thanks for writing and for sharing that story, and thanks for your comments about the book. That is the best feeling of all when I hear that people are telling their children more stories on a regular basis. That's fabulous. Thanks for writing. Have a fabulous day!
